We've all been there. You're having a bad day, and nothing seems to go your way.
The world is against you, and everything that can go wrong does.
It's easy to wallow in self-pity, but that will not do any good.
In fact, it will only make things worse.
Here are 9 unusual ways to snap out of an ugly mood and get back on track!
1. Take a walk the opposite way.
Walking can be incredibly therapeutic. However, this time walk in reverse.
I don't mean walk backwards. I mean, instead of walking clockwise around the block, go anti-clockwise.
This will have your mind in a particular state that is mindful of the new way of walking rather than setting it on autopilot and letting your moody thoughts take over.
Walking gets your blood pumping, clears your head and helps you get outside your headspace.
Not only can you benefit from the vitamin D the sun provides that improves mood, you also get away from a potential environment that is causing your mood.
2. Play with some slime.
Slime is not just a kid's toy anymore. It is deeply therapeutic.
In my work as a therapist in my old life in corporate, I witnessed many patients benefit from the attraction to slime.
Slime can be made at home and is recommended due to its deep sensory experience.
Fiddling with slime can be a less daunting way to meditate and be mindful in the here and now.
feel joy and elevate your mood
3. Smile.
This may sound counterintuitive, but research shows that even when you don't feel like it, forcing yourself to smile can improve your mood.
I like to throw on a 30min comedy set on Youtube to get my laugh going, which leaves me feeling much better.
It might seem like you're burying what might be an emotion important to work through, but it's not.
Having a moment to feel joy and elevate your mood can help you think much clearer and more sensible.
4. Breathe properly.
When you're feeling overwhelmed, it's easy to get into a state of shallow breathing.
Deep, conscious breaths can help relax your body and mind while allowing more oxygen to reach your brain.
If your mood is due to the onset of anxiety, you might find yourself insufficiently breathing.
Doing a small breathing exercise is a form of mindfulness and can help you shift things back into perspective.
5. Have an Orgasm.
Releasing vital hormones can mitigate stress and reset your mood.
We all know that having sex while irritable can not only positively arouse your partner but also deal with your sour mood.
Even if it's just solo, reaching climax is a healthy and human way of fighting the funk.
retail stores and companies use rose for a mood booster
6. Smell a Rose.
Aromatherapy is one of the most popular natural remedies for stress.
Rose is one of the oldest flowers in botany to omit a scent.
Finding a rose and then smelling its perfume is elegant, nostalgic and comforting.
The smell of a rose has been known to help moods, especially if you're feeling grouchy and many retail stores and companies use rose for a mood booster in their store scent or products..
7. Visualise a happy place.
A visualization is a powerful tool for calming the mind and relieving stress.
Take some time to close your eyes, relax your body and imagine a beautiful place that brings you joy.
This could be a fond memory you have with a loved one, like a party, special gathering, memorable trip etc.
Visualising this happy place teleports you back emotionally to this good time.
8. Listen to a good song.
Listening to a song that makes you smile can help lift your spirits and put you back in the right frame of mind.
Music creates strong connections to old and new memories, so it can be a great way to put yourself in the right mood.
My sister plays death metal music and screams at the top of her lungs to it at home in the privacy of her shower.
She swears by this method and claims it is heavily cathartic.
It doesn't have to be a song you like, just something that will make you smile!
9 Be grateful.
Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can instantly change your mood by shifting your focus from the negative to the positive.
Take some time to think about the things you are grateful for and appreciate them for their beauty, blessings or good fortune.
Gratitude is one of the best tools we have for improving our outlook on life.
Think of something you are thankful for, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.
It could be something as simple as the sunshine on a cloudy day or being able to enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the morning.
In conclusion
When you find yourself in a funk, don't worry because it can easily be shifted!
